As an affiliate of Texas History Day and National History Day, Heart of Texas Regional History Fair follows the rules set forth by National History Day. Please consult the NHD Contest Rule Book for rules and regulations. The NHD Contest Rule Book is available in both English and Spanish

The Heart of Texas Regional History Fair began in 1986 under the original sponsorship of the Strecker Museum at Baylor University. Always growing and reaching more schools, we now anticipate over 350 students to compete annually in our regional fair.

The Texas Collection currently sponsors the fair, which is held at the Bill Daniel Student Center at Baylor University each February. Numerous awards, prizes, and gifts are given by HOTRHF to award excellence. Please visit our Special Awards page for more information on Special Award criteria.

Entries in the exhibit, paper, or website catergories will be open to public viewing in the Barfield Drawing Room between 12:30 to 2:00pm. The exhibit hall will be closed during judging.

Entries in the performance and documentary catergories will be open to public viewing according to scheduled times and locations.

After registration is complete in January, the schedule will be released to sponsors and will be made available on our website. All events are held at the Bill Daniel Student Center (1311 S. 5th Street) at the heart of the Baylor University campus.

The National History Day judging criteria for each category will be a helpful guide for judges and participants alike. Judging forms will be nearly identical to those used at National History Day. The percentages by which the judging breaks down are as follows:

Historical Quality (60%)

  • Historical accuracy
  • Historical context
  • Analysis and interpretation
  • Use of available primary sources
  • Wide research
  • Balanced research

Relation to Theme (20%)

  • Clearly relates to theme
  • Demonstrates significance of topic in history and draws conclusions

Clarity of Presentation (20%)

  • Presentation, written materials are original, clear, appropriate, organized and articulate
  • Entry is organized; visual impact is appropriate to topic

Rule Compliance

Judges will take any rule infraction into consideration in their final rankings. Failure to comply with the rules will count against the entry. Rule infractions should be corrected before a winning entry competes in the next level of competition.
